Grows to 30-35 ft. Widely tolerant of most soils except poorly drained. Ranges from a shrub to a small tree. Likes forest edges and understory areas.  Frequently use in mixed borders and is intolerant of salt.  It has a four season interest with early spring white flowers, outstanding orange-red fall color and striking grey bark. Edible purplish-black sweet fruit in late summer attracts many birds. Growth – S-M
