American Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis)
Creamy white flower clusters in June-July, turn into black berries used for wine, juice and pies. Fruits are also excellent wildlife food for birds. Grows 5 – 12 ft tall with fastest growth in full sun.
Shadblow Serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis)
Small tree or large shrub, large leaves, average well drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Showy flowers in the spring, and dark-purplish fruit in summer is used for jams, jellies and pies.
Native Flowering Raspberry (Rubus odoratus)
3-6 ft., medium moist, well drained soil, partial shade. Fragrant large, pinkish-purple flowers, red fruit that is not particularly tasty to humans. Attracts birds and butterflies. (Limited supply of the native raspberry. If necessary, a cultivated variety of raspberry will be substituted.)
Red Mulberry (Morus rubra)
Medium, fast-growing tree, moist soil, prefers shade. Abundant fruit eaten by people, birds and small mammals. Can be eaten raw or cooked, and is used for jams, jellies and drinks.
