Northern Bayberry Shrub (Myrica pensylvanica)
Size: 18-24 in.
Light: Sun, Sun/Shade
Soil Type: Dry/Moderate/Moist
This semi-evergreen shrub typically grows to 5-6 feet tall in a wide range of soils, but does best in sandy soil in full to partial sun where it spreads and forms colonies. Growth rate is moderate. The female plants produce small, round blue-gray waxy berries which grow up and down the stems and persist into winter, thus providing food for migratory songbirds. Needs male and female plants to produce fruit so plant several. Leaves are highly aromatic when crushed. Wax from fruit is used in candle making but is considered toxic if eaten.
