Yellow Birch
Yellow Birch
Yellow Birch (Betula alleghaniensis)
Size: 2-3′
Light: full sun/part shade
Growth Rate: Moderate
Moderately fast growing native tree, reaches 60-80 ft on a variety of sites and soil conditions, but thrives on moist, well drained soils along streams and swamps. Grows best in full sun but will tolerate partial shade. The distinctive bark peels into small, curly, reddish brown to bronze strips. Fall color is bright yellow. The small, upright catkins release seeds in the spring, providing a vital food source for birds at a time when many other food sources are scarce. May need protection from deer browse. Its wood is used for many purposes, including veneer.
