Black Walnut (Juglans nigra)
Rapid growing tree up to 70 ft., full to partial sun, moist, rich soil, produces a large nut that is a favorite of squirrels. The wood of the black walnut is a favorite among woodworkers. Note: Black walnut roots secrete juglone, a substance that significantly inhibits the growth of some plants, especially those in the tomato family.

 

 

Butternut (Juglans cinerea)
Slow growing tree up to 60 ft., full sun, moist, welldrained soil, prefers bottomland. Sweet, oily tasting nuts hence the name Butternut.

 

 

American Hazelnut (Corylus americana)
3-12 ft., sun to deep shade, moist soil, showy spring flowers, nuts loved by wildlife, vivid coloring in fall foliage.

 

 

Northern Pecan* (Carya illinoensis)
Large tree 100-140 ft., tall, rich, moist soil, likes warmth and sun, delicious thin shelled nuts.
